Looking for a couple of new tunes to add to your road trip mix or to curl up with on the couch for the March break?
Look no further. Alice Phoebe Lou’s latest album, Paper Castles (released on March 8), is evocative, dreamy and relatable. It should be at the top of every self-respecting indie-folk fan’s latest music collection.
Lou’s consistency does not waver in the 10-track album, which is a slick mix of blues and jazz. It deals with a range of themes from nostalgia to patriarchy and misogyny.
Paper Castles is lyrically raw and honest, prompting the listener to get lost in the story each song has to tell.
Tracks on the top of the listener’s list include Skin Crawl, Galaxies and Something Holy, all of which have accompanying music videos.
Skin Crawl is particularly evocative as it alludes to the spine-tingling experience of being grappled and groped whilst out in a crowded club – an experience many women know far too well.
The video is a clever comment on this behaviour as the men in the music video are presented as pieces of furniture, merely filling the space to perform a specific function – suggesting a “taste of their own medicine”.
The dreamy synths that thread Galaxies together are sure to take your mind on a trip, while Something Holy is a slow, soft and soothing ode to love.
Lou is currently touring North America and Europe. Go to www.alicephoebelou.com to keep an eye out for her next appearance in the motherland.
