An attempted robbery took place at Augenta Jewellers in Andringa Street Stellenbosch this morning, at around 9:45.
Security guards were alerted after bystanders witnessed a man dressed in all white trying to rob the jewellery store.
“I heard a loud voice screaming. I turned around and heard a woman’s voice yelling for security and then the security nearby rushed to the shop,” said Jehané de Beer, a witness to the incident. A man came running from the direction of the shop with his hands clenched and security rushing after him.
The alleged robber, who was dressed in a white muslim tunic, then jumped into a car, which had been idling in the street, and got away, De Beer said.
According to Peter Xolani, an ABC armed security guard who ran after the alleged robber, the suspect got into a silver-grey Nissan Tiida. Two more passengers were in the vehicle, alleged Xolani.
According to Shane Titus, a security guard from EPP protection services, the suspect was unarmed.
“He didn’t have a gun or something like that on him,” said Titus.
The police arrived about a half an hour after the attempted robbery took place.
No one was harmed in the incident.
