The Dorp Street Sunday Market has been extended to take place every Wednesday on Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Rooiplein to be more accessible to students. This was according to Talent Mapfumo, representative of Adam and Eve Collab.
“Part of our [Adam and Eve collab] business concept is we organise markets, first it was the Dorp Street Market and now it is the Market on the Plein,” said Danneel Stone, owner of Adam and Eve Collab. PHOTO: Thameenah Daniels
The Wednesday Market on the Plein was introduced because many students cannot make it to the Dorp Street market on Sundays, explained Danneel Stone, owner of Adam and Eve Collab. “So we just wanted to bring the market to [the students],” added Stone.
“The Market on the Plein has been an idea for about four years now actually. It’s just been a battle getting this thing done,” said Stone. Many processes had to be followed to ensure that SU’s rules and regulations were being respected, added Stone.
“It was great seeing all of the cool stalls that were there and seeing all the interesting people who came to the market,” said Neo Kodisang, visual communication design student at Stellenbosch University. PHOTO: Thameenah Daniels
More to come
The current stalls at the market are not the end of the offerings, said Stone. Yoga classes will be implemented on the grass areas and food vendors from the Neelsie will be encouraged to have pop-up stores outside to participate with food trucks, stated Stone.
“I had the opportunity to introduce my work to a new audience … and showcase my business and all my designs in such a great environment,” said Nadine Snell, owner of Full Bloom Creations, a vendor at the Market on the Plein.
The atmosphere and vibe was truly enjoyable, especially as someone who doesn’t usually thrift, said Liyema Langa, a student at SU, who attended the market.
“I’ve been to the Dorp Street Market and I always enjoy my time there, but university tends to get a bit hectic so I haven’t had time to go down to the market in almost a year now. It’s really awesome that the market came to us in a sense,” said Neo Kodisang, visual communication design student at SU.
“Not all the students can get to the market on a Sunday so we just wanted to bring the market to them,” said Danneel Stone, owner of Adam and Eve Collab, and organiser of the first Market on the Plein hosted on 26 April. PHOTO: Thameenah Daniels
