In a town with over 30 000 students, it may come as a surprise that there are still a few places that fly under the radar. And yet they exist. And although they hide in plain sight, few people seem to take advantage of all they have to offer. This list of five places may come in handy for someone who has a class-free day, or an hour or two to spare, and is in the mood to do something a little different.
iKhaya Backpacker’s rooftop
Unbeknownst to many, the iKhaya Backpackers is home to one of the prettiest spots in town to watch the sunset. The views of the Stellenbosch mountain are breathtaking and it’s just a couple of flights of stairs down to grab the nearest beer at the iKhaya Backpacker’s bar. The views and centrality of this spot makes any event happening here an enjoyable time, watching the stars rise above a splendid Stellenbosch.
Amazink
Amazink, a place that every resident of Stellenbosch should tick off their bucket-list, combines theatre and food into a vibrant and entertaining experience sure to capture the imagination of all. A short drive into Kayamandi, which is just outside of central Stellenbosch, is all that is required to get to Amazink. Friday night is the best time to go as this is when Amazink Live performs their weekly show at 19:00.
The performance is accompanied by a hearty three-course meal, blending together the finest of South African cuisines with some local rhythm. It is important, however, to book tickets for the show on computicket as it is very popular and there are no tickets on sale at the door.
Stellenbosch University Art Museum
For those who may be stuck on campus and are tired of studying, the Stellenbosch University (SU) Art Museum could be the perfect study break. Situated between Wilgenhof residence and Meraki on Ryneveld street, it is within walking distance from anywhere on campus.
Opened in 1991, the museum’s permanent art collection stretches all the way back to 1919, and contains over 3000 individual pieces, ensuring that there is always an abundance of art to take in.
The museum is also home to both a cultural history and anthropological exhibit, as well as playing host to a variety of interesting conferences and discourses. For someone looking for first date ideas, why not take your significant other on a tour of some of the finest pieces of art this town has to offer?
Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch
For students who miss their pets at home, or any other animal-lover, the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch is the perfect place to go and hang out with some animals in need of a little love.
Located on Devon Valley road just outside of central Stellenbosch, there is always something going on at the Animal Welfare. Dog-lovers can participate daily between 10:00 and 15:00 by walking and socialising with the shelter dogs.
For those who prefer cats, anybody is welcome to hang out with some feline friends at the cattery during open hours between 10:00 and 16:00.
Koelbaai
Although this isn’t in Stellenbosch, it’s too good to leave off this list. A 40-minute drive (without traffic) will get you to this magnificent beach, where you can usually be greeted by great weather and clear water.
Be warned, it is a bit of a walk from the parking lot down the path to the beach, so pack wisely and don’t forget snacks, as the nearest shops are in Gordon’s Bay.
There are not many better ways to spend a Saturday than lying on the beach tanning, catching some great waves, or exploring the nearby caves (take a flashlight).
Get a few friends to chip in some petrol money, fill up your car and go exploring!
