About 800 tickets sold for a recent amapiano and hip-hop festival, organised to test the local appetite for a festival of this kind. This is according to Tristan Olivier, an organiser of the Talk to Me Nice Festival.
Although the organisers are not new to the Stellenbosch market in terms of events, they saw a gap in the market regarding the amapiano and hip-hop genres, stated Olivier.
“Our first event is just really a pilot event to get a feel of how the market responds,” said Olivier. The festival was hosted at Stellenbosch Town Hall on 4 March.
Bringing something new
“Talk to Me Nice provides a unique festival and club-like experience for the students because we believe it’s not there currently,” commented Olivier.
They wanted to bring “something different” to Stellenbosch, explained Olivier.

Taking the stage
Artist Julie Marinho, better known by her stage name Kazeli, was one of seven performers at the festival, said Olivier.
She was “very thankful to be here” as the crowd was “hyped up” and “supportive”, said Marinho.
South African Youtuber, Erve Bukasa, was invited to promote the event, said Olivier.
His fans complained about how there were no amapiano events in Stellenbosch, said Bukasa. The festival was able to fill that gap, he said.

Fan reaction
The festival was well received as people “appreciated having an event that catered for them”, said Olivier.
The Talk to Me Nice festival lived up to expectations and should come back to Stellenbosch, said Kyle Marinus, who attended the festival.
