An elderly man recently passed away in front of Checkers in Eikestad Mall.
The deceased, Sonwabiso Daniel Ramncwana (76), passed away at approximately 11:30 on 5 October. This was according to Sonwabiso’s son, Bele Ramncwana, who brought his father to the store to do his shopping and receive his grant from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
“He was an old man and he was diabetic. He just collapsed,” said Bele.

Eikestad Mall’s management team “immediately contacted the relevant authorities, and worked with officials to ensure that all regulated proceedings were adhered to”, according to Andrew Grundlingh, Eikestad Mall’s spokesperson.
Police and private security arrived on the scene shortly after Sonwabiso passed away, and his body was blocked off using shopping trolleys and store barriers.
Sergeant Jason Rhoda from the Stellenbosch police station confirmed the incident. “The deceased had a medical condition and allegedly passed away from natural causes,” said Rhoda.
Sonwabiso, who lived in Kayamandi, was a much-loved member of the community, according to Bele.
“The Eikestad Mall team extend sincere condolences to the family and friends on their loss,” said Grundlingh.
