Stellenbosch-based music producer, Synth Peter, set a new record on 25 July, as the highest-debuting South African on the Kfm Top40.

Peter’s song “Doef Doef”, which also featured other artists including Wortel Kombat, Katinka, Loufi and What The Faf, reached number 11 on the chart, according to an article that first appeared on Kfm’s website.

It was also stated, in the same article, that the song surpassed the record held by Craig Lucas, whose song “Happy” debuted on the weekly radio show, Kfm Top40, at number 13 two weeks prior.

“It just feels quite surreal, to be honest. The fact that ‘Doef Doef’ was not just the highest-debuting South African song ever on the chart, but an Afrikaans song, just blows my mind,” Peter told MatieMedia.

“Doef Doef” was written after Synth Peter told Wortel Kombat that they should write a bass driven track, which people can dance to. MUSIC: Synth Peter.

According to Carl Wastie, host of the Kfm Top40, Peter can expect further popularity if he continues to create innovative music.

“‘Doef Doef’ is definitely one of the 2020 tracks of the year, and long shall it get parties started when parties eventually get started,” said Wastie.

Peter has since suggested to MatieMedia that he has turned his attention away from his achievement and rather towards making “truck loads” of new music.

Pioneering Afrikaans music

Arnold van der Walt, a fan of Peter and programme manager at Mfm, started listening to his music when he released “Seks op die Strand”.

According to Van der Walt, he hopes that the rise of “Doef Doef” will bring a new respect for Afrikaans music.

“Afrikaans [music] needs quality produced music like [“Doef Doef”].It’s super fun and it sounds so good,” said Van der Walt.
