Edinburgh Rugby have announced the signing of a local Paul Roos Gymnasium student, Jordan Venter (17), for the upcoming rugby season.
Venter signed for the Scottish side on 5 March and will join his new teammates at the end of his matric year, in December.
“The opportunity is unreal. There’s just loads of excitement,” said Venter.
Edinburgh Rugby currently top their conference in the Guinness Pro14 tournament and have reached the quarter-finals of the European Challenge Cup.
“It’s a massive opportunity,” said Venter. “Everything has been laid out for me and now it’s my job to get it done.”
Richard Cockerill, Edinburgh Rugby head coach, said in a press release that his side had been closely monitoring Venter’s development and were pleased with the club’s new acquisition.
“Jordan is a young, athletic centre with bags of potential. We have kept a close eye on his school career and he’ll be a welcome addition to the squad next season,” said Cockerill.
Venter said that much of his development was owed to the time he spent at Paul Roos.
“Paul Roos provides the best opportunities. No matter what, the teachers, the organisation and everyone will be there for me – which is unreal,” said Venter.
Paul Roos’ Rector, André van Staden, was delighted for Venster’s opportunity and believes he will succeed in Scotland.
“We’re extremely proud of Jordan,” said van Staden. “He has worked hard for this and is a talented guy. I’m sure he’ll make a success of his opportunity.”
