A suspect has been detained for murder following a recent shooting in Cloetesville that resulted in one fatality and four injuries.
This was according to warrant officer Zenobia Sedeman from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Cloetesville.
The deceased is Shafiek Majal (21), who leaves behind a girlfriend and two sons aged 2 and 3, said a family member of Majal, who requested to remain anonymous.
An investigation into the shooting is underway, stated Sedeman.

Multiple victims
The shooting occurred on the evening of 17 September in Primrose Road, and SAPS was called to the scene at 18:10, said Sedeman.
The injured individuals are receiving treatment at various hospitals, stated Sedeman.
When SAPS arrived at the scene, officers discovered two individuals who were wounded during the shooting, stated Sedeman. They were transported to Stellenbosch Provincial Hospital, she said. Upon arriving at the hospital, SAPS discovered that there were three additional people wounded as a result of the shooting, explained Sedeman.

Shafiek Majal was declared dead at Stellenbosch Provincial Hospital, stated Sedeman.
A male (32) sustained a bullet wound to his upper left leg, another male (19) was wounded on the right side of his body, and a third male (32) was shot in his left arm, said Sedeman. Another individual (22) was transported to Tygerberg Hospital to receive treatment, said Sedeman.
Caught in the crossfire
A fight broke out in the street, and Majal went to ensure that his father was okay when the shooting began, according to the family member.
Majal wanted to make sure that his father avoided the gunfire but ended up in between the shooters himself, said another family member of Majal, who also requested anonymity.
Majal’s father was left uninjured, but his nephew, Majal’s cousin, was shot in the leg and is currently receiving treatment in Tygerberg Hospital, according to the family member.

“Shafiek was a loving individual [who] liked to spend time with his kids,” said the family member. “He always had a smile on his face,” they added.
