The Stellenbosch police department has formally opened a case docket into the death of the Stellenbosch University (SU) student who died last week Friday.
Leandró Hopley (18), a resident of Huis Visser, was found in his residence room Wednesday 24 July after having presumably choked after throwing up. His life support machines were turned off on Friday.
The Stellenbosch police department formally opened a case into the student’s death on Monday. “A docket was opened yesterday (29 July),” said Captain Martin of SAPS Stellenbosch. “Detectives will be placed on the case today (30 July) or tomorrow (31 July).”
Martin says that a postmortem report will be made available next week.
Residence members took Leandró to his room during a social event in Huis Visser’s pub, King Fisher.
According to Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana from the SAPS Western Cape Media Centre, the incident had not been reported to them.
John Hopley, Leandró’s brother, expressed his loss in saying that his brother was a soulful person. “He laughed and cried with other people. He always smiled and sympathised with everyone.
“He was always there for me and always stood up for everyone. He forgave and forgot easily. In his eyes, no one was bad. He just saw the good in everyone.”
Huis Visser Primarius, Stefan Janse van Vuuren, says that the residence is in shock. “Leandró made time for everyone and was popular in the house. His loss has left a hole.”
