An Equality Unit initiative, First Things First, holds free sexual, reproductive and physical health screenings for Stellenbosch University (SU) students, this week in the Neelsie.
The event held this week aims to encourage students to start participating in conversations about their own health and wellbeing.
“This is about raising awareness and providing a space where students are able to prioritise their sexual and reproductive health,” said Kaylon Weppelman, programme coordinator at the Equality Unit.
The event offers more than just HIV and STI screenings. Trained counsellors also provide a range of other tests.
“It is a comprehensive wellness testing of HIV, STI, BMI, blood pressure, as well as other screenings and wellness advice such as reproductive health,” said Michelle Munro, the HIV/Aids and Sexuality portfolio manager at the Equality Unit.
As a way of encouraging people to get tested and participate in the event, the Equality Unit is giving out cash prizes. One of which is awarded to the residence or private student organisations (PSOs) with the most event attendees. Data captured on accommodation, for example, is dealt with separately from medical information and is optional.
“We call on all Maties (students and staff) to make use of this free, confidential and effortless opportunity to take responsibility for their own health. Some great prizes could also be won!” Munro said.
First Things First will be in the Neelsie from 9:00 to 16:00 every day until 6 March.
