Stellenbosch Football Club (FC) drew against city rivals Cape Town Spurs FC in their second derby in March. The final score for the game – played at Danie Craven Stadium on 9 March – was 1-1.
Cape Town Spurs FC was first to score, with midfielder, Asenele Velebayi, kicking for goal in the 43rd minute of the game.
“It was good passing and good control,” said Ernst Middendorp, Cape Town Spurs FC head coach about Velebayi’s goal on Saturday evening.
Cape Town Spurs were hoping for a win against Stellenbosch FC but have kept a “winner mentality” despite the draw, continued Middendorp.

A fight to the end
“There was positive play from our side,” said Steve Barker, Stellenbosch FC head coach at the post game press conference.
The team struggled with the final pass and the final third leg of the game but had good possession over the ball, said Barker.
“The second half… I felt we started strong – on the front foot. I felt we deserved the goal that we got,” said Barker.
Iqraam Rayners scored a penalty goal for Stellenboosch FC in the 68th minute.
“I think we deserved the equaliser,” said Barker.

Putting on a show

“I think it’s our responsibility as Cape Town to make the derbies more exciting,” said Barker.
Stellenbosch FC also played against Cape Town City FC on 5 March, winning the game 1-0.
Derbies are always exciting for Stellenbosch FC to play and the team has performed well in this season’s derbies, said Barker.
“It gives us belief and confidence that when we play derbies that we can win it,” he said.
“I think that [Cape Town] Spurs’ number 17 has a bright future… he scored the goal, and has a huge future,” said Robin Jacobs, Stellenbosch FC supporter. “I think we should have more derbies as the other games are not this full. We get a lot of supporters with derbies, so I think it’s important.”
Supporters at derbies expect teams to do well as the teams “want to get one over the other”, said Steve Barker, Stellenbosch Football Club (FC)’s head coach at Stellenbosch FC’s second derby of March against Cape Town Spurs FC. VIDEO: Cheyenne Haas
