Despite South Africa having gone almost 200 days since it last experienced loadshedding, Stellenbosch Municipality is undeterred in its plan to use renewable energy to secure its energy sustainability, according to municipality spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar.
The municipality’s plan involves the proposed construction of several renewable energy sources, including solar facilities and batteries, in order to render the local economy immune from all future loadshedding up to stage 2. This was confirmed by the minutes of the special council meeting held on 14 August 2024.
The tender invitation will be released by January 2025, according to a request for expression of interest (EOI), which Stellenbosch Municipality released in order to gather information that will help to shape the tender.
