A global analysis of 1.6 bn online conversations and content pieces has ranked Stellenbosch the 23rd most-loved destination in the world. This is according to the destination marketing agency, Destination Think’s, Tourism Sentiment Index (TSI). Through this index, Destination Think measures destinations’ ability to generate positive perceptions of their tourism offerings.
Along with Stellenbosch, three other towns in the Western Cape made the list: Knysna claimed the highest position at 19th, Hermanus 41st and Cape Town 54th. The TSI results were made public at the end of January.

In written correspondence, Stellenbosch mayor, Gesie van Deventer, mentioned she was “pleased to learn that Stellenbosch has claimed a spot on this prestigious list”. She thanked the community’s role-players and tourism stakeholders for their work in enabling the local tourism industry’s growth.
“Stellenbosch continues to be seen as a destination of choice for local and international visitors and is one of the best places worldwide to work, visit, stay and play,” said Van Deventer.

Elmarie Rabe, marketing manager of Visit Stellenbosch, mentioned to that their department has been working hard during the unstable times caused by Covid-19 in order to keep Stellenbosch “top of mind sharing the mind-blowing assets and activities visitors and locals can enjoy while in Stellenbosch”.
“This acknowledgement instills a sense of pride for those who have been working tirelessly to build Stellenbosch and to support our economic recovery efforts,” said Rabe. “It is wonderful to be able to showcase Stellenbosch, especially now that the world’s eyes are on us.”

As a university town, Stellenbosch University (SU) adds to Stellenbosch’s tourism offerings as one of the town’s main attractions. This is according to Dr Leslie van Rooi, SU’s Senior Director of Social Impact and Transformation, who spoke to MatieMedia in a written correspondence.
“SU is a member of Visit Stellenbosch and directly partners to enhance the tourist-based opportunities of the town,” said Van Rooi. “Further to this, we support local [non-governmental organisations], schools, the municipality and local business on various levels. This all adds to a focused investment in the current and future possibilities of Stellenbosch.”
