Students from Stellenbosch University (SU) came together on 24 September to celebrate their heritage at an event hosted by SU’s Zulu Society. The event not only highlighted Zulu customs, but also served as a reminder of the importance of preserving and sharing diverse cultural histories within South Africa.
This is according to Sinethemba Ngcongo, founder and chairperson of the SU Zulu Society.
“[Heritage Day] is a very important day to have because a lot of people learn about their roots and a lot of people learn about different cultures and tribes which we have among our diverse nation,” Ngcongo said.
Heritage day, previously known as Shaka Day in honour of the Zulu king, Shaka, has evolved into a national day of celebration that encourages South Africans to to reflect on and take pride in their heritage.
“Heritage day to me is all about bringing people together, since it’s all about celebrating diversity,” said Simphiwe Ngema, SU student and member of SU’s Zulu Society.
