The accordion, celebrated at Drostdy Theatre

Ahead of World Accordion Day on 6 May, Drostdy Theatre in Stellenbosch recently hosted a concert organised by the South African Free Reed Association (SAFRA). “In many countries the accordion is famous for being inherently linked to its cultural music, and South Africa is no exception,” said Leon Oosthuizen, president of SAFRA. In celebration of the historic day that Cyrill Demian (1772-1849) filed a patent for the accordion in Vienna, SAFRA gathered 13 accordionists, two vocalists and eight dancers to showcase the instrument’s versatility, according to Oosthuizen.
