With exams tending to flash by in the blink of an eye and the silly season drawing closer and closer, MatieMedia went on a mission to find out where you can buy the cheapest 500ml draughts in Stellenbosch.
Visiting 35 tap-beer-serving establishments, spread out all over central Stellenbosch, we asked managers and owners one question: “What is the cheapest 500ml draught you have on offer?” Use the interactive map below to see where we went and what we discovered. (We were after standard prices and not specials.)
After many hours of thorough research, the not-so-sobering results are in. The most expensive draughts on our list can be found at Balboa Balcony Bar and the Oude Werf Restaurant.
At both these establishments the cheapest 500ml draught costs R55, CBC Lager at Balboa’s and a Stellies Lager at Oude Werf.
The winners? A drumroll please! The cheapest 500ml draughts in Stellenbosch can be found at De Akker and Gino’s for R25.
At De Akker R25 can buy you either a Hansa or Castle draught and at Gino’s the same amount can buy you either a Black Label or Castle draught. Use the interactive graph below to find out how your favourite bar or restuarant performed.

“What can I say? Beers are made for drinking! Not for selling at ridiculously high prices,” exclaims Simon Matthysen, owner of De Akker, who is pleased, but not too surprised with the result.
“We just don’t do gimmicks here. Our beers are always priced at special standards,” says Gino’s owner, Dom Mazza, who is also well aware that his draught prices are very competitive.
Longtime Gino’s manager, Gary van Zyl, says they always try to keep the prices as low as possible.
“Before I even started working here I believed in the ‘lower price, more feed through the shop’ ethos and when I came to work here that’s exactly how it was,” van Zyl adds.

Manuela Ladu (23), who completed her honours degree in visual communication design at Stellenbosch University in 2017, says she is not surprised and surprised at the same time.
“I am not surprised with Gino’s and Akker topping the list. They are two of the oldest restaurants in Stellenbosch and frequented by many loyal customers. Students and residents alike. They are institutions in my opinion, especially Akker,” says the lifelong Stellenbosch resident.
“But on the other hand I am very surprised that places like Bohemia, Mystics or Aandklas, that are almost exclusively frequented by penniless students, don’t have more competitive prices,” she adds.
