Vegetarian braai raises funds for food security

A Heritage Day vegetarian braai recently raised funds to promote food security in Stellenbosch. This is according to Erilene Schiødt-Heinsen, founder of The Heartbeet Kitchen.

Schiødt-Heinsen is spearheading a plant-based kitchen in Stellenbosch, which aims to tackle food insecurity and educate individuals on correct gardening practices. Her idea came to fruition during Covid-19, when food insecurity was at an all-time high, she said.

“So many people had a lack of [access to] food and that really pinpointed […] how important food is,” said Heinsen.

Cooking for vegetarians is a challenge, according to celebrity chef, Ashley Dokter-Mosotho, who participated in an event at a local restaurant on Heritage Day.

“The biggest thing to have with food is to have fun. Yes, it should be filling and everything [but] who knew vegetarians could braai?” said Mosotho.

The Heartbeet Kitchen will be working in conjunction with Aunty Sophie’s Kitchen, to upskill individuals when it comes to greenery.
