Waste towers reveal the mess we leave behind

Towers of waste revealing the amount of waste that is produced by Stellenbosch University (SU) campus every two days were recently displayed on the Rooiplein and in front of the engineering faculty. The towers were displayed from 21 April to 27 April to celebrate Earth Week. The project was organised by SU’s Facilities Management Division, specifically the material recycling facility on Welgevallen farm, as well as Wasteplan, a company responsible for recycling SU’s campus waste. This is according to Christine Groenewald, environmental sustainability engagement coordinator at SU’s Facilities Management.

The towers were displayed to raise awareness of the impact that people’s actions have on the planet, and to act as a reminder that not all waste can be recycled, said Groenewald. The goal is to make people “think about what they use and what happens to their waste after they dispose of it,” she said.
